Case Studies

Westpac

MoveCorp has undertaken a number of projects for Westpac, focussing upon furniture assessment in smaller projects, but also delivering full Relocation Management programs for significant relocation activity. MoveCorp’s most notable project was the detailed planning and management of Westpac’s move of over 5500 staff into their iconic Kent Street site in Sydney’s CBD. The program involved the utilisation of a detailed communication strategy to promote and generate enthusiasm for the “Our Great Place” relocation project.

Sydney Water

MoveCorp was engaged by Sydney Water to plan and manage the relocation of a number of Sydney Water Departments from five locations to One Smith Street Parramatta, amongst other smaller projects. MoveCorp developed a strategy for the relocation to Parramatta that provided minimal disruption to the business and some of its 24hr operations over the move period. At an early stage, MoveCorp identified that maintaining split services across the two sites was not possible for a long period. Therefore, the decision was made (after feasibility planning) to relocate the organisation over three stages, including a main move phase of 950 staff, a significant challenge that was executed with great success.

MoveCorp was subsequently appointed to manage the relocation of:
• 450 staff from the numerous heritage sites at Potts Hill into their new development at the Potts Hill reservoir.
• 150 staff into the new Liverpool Facility
• 120 staff into the new Sydney Water Wollongong Office Building

American Express

Prior to American Express’ relocation in early 2008, MoveCorp conducted a significant Filing & Storage Consultancy exercise with approximately 1430 staff at various Sydney CBD locations. MoveCorp worked with the business units to improve the efficiency of the way each team worked with documentation and stored items. MoveCorp also ensured the correct provision of storage hardware for the new Shelley Street site. Operating as independent advisor to Amex, MoveCorp was able to assist in procuring the most appropriate system for the needs of the business unit. MoveCorp was subsequently appointed to undertake all aspects of the Relocation Management activity in order to deliver a seamless transition into the new site. MoveCorp’s focus was to ensure that American Express staff obtained maximum benefit from the new environment, with minimum disruption to normal operations.

Telstra

Telstra’s premises were undergoing significant refurbishment and rebuild that required coordination and churn activity around the works. The program had a substantial IT and call centre element that involved management of uptime throughout the process. MoveCorp developed a mini-strategy for each major churn schedule and were engaged full-time for a period of two years. A team of three staff remained on-site throughout the project, working on a rotating shift basis.

Gold Coast University Hospital—The Story so Far

A key element of the transition from general to teaching hospital, Gold Coast Hospital will fully relocate from its existing premises to a new 750 bed facility as part of a $450 million scheme. MoveCorp’s remit includes the provision of relocation planning and storage advice across all areas of the hospital. The initial stage 1 strategy has been delivered, following a review with over 50 clinical and non-clinical departments, to ensure that departmental dependencies and specialist requirements are fully understood. In providing the Course of Action and Order of March deliverables, continued operation, staff requirements and patient care were of paramount importance. MoveCorp has also undertaken an extensive file, storage and materials handling review of all areas of the hospital, to recommend cost effective, space efficient systems that focussed upon standardised units, uniform storage codes and ease of sterilisation. Stage 2 activity has recently been initiated, whereby MoveCorp will create a Departmental DIP with every team and formulate major sub-strategies on behalf of the hospital. Change Management, specialist subcontractor scoping and commissioning input will be included within the sub-strategies.

National Australia Bank - Melbourne

NAB engaged MoveCorp to be a part of their National@Docklands project team. Two Move Managers worked full time to manage the transition of 3,800 staff exiting out of 15 buildings into their new premises in Docklands, Melbourne. The relocation project spanned from March 2003 to November 2004.

UNSW—Lowy Cancer Centre

MoveCorp has recently undertaken the relocation of the UNSW Faculty of Medicine into the Lowy Cancer Research Centre. 350 laboratory-based staff were relocated with significant volumes of associated research equipment, materials and specimens, requiring the creation of detailed departmental implementation plans and the coordination of all third party vendors. This high profile project required the careful relocation planning of highly specialised equipment within a secure environment and was delivered without interference to research programs or daily activity for the department.

Sonic Healthcare and Douglass Hanly Moir

In 2007, MoveCorp undertook the successful relocation of Sydney’s largest pathology laboratory, with extensive laboratories accommodating 650 staff and warehouses. As this facility operated 24/7, processing over 15,000 patient specimens daily with no downtime, a critical planning issue was to identify the special factors that would influence the move sequence. Statistically, the relocation consisted of 1,000 items of laboratory equipment, 1,100 items of furniture and approximately 1,200 lineal metres of documentation. The move involved a combination of clinical and non-clinical departments, to include cytology, histology, microbiology, toxicology, haematology, biochemistry, immunoserology, molecular biology and genetics.

Macquarie University Hospital and Australian School of Advanced Medicine

MoveCorp has recently completed the relocation of ASAM into the new Macquarie University Hospital, including all specialist laboratory equipment on a short timeframe for delivery. The move was delivered successfully and resulted in MoveCorp being appointed to undertake the relocation of the Macquarie University Hospital team itself into its new premises.

Sydney Ferries

Sydney Ferries successfully completed a project to relocate its 80 head office employees into a newly fitted-out facility close to its operations at Circular Quay. The organisation was moved from three locations into one and the relocation was used as a platform for cultural change. The project involved the careful planning and scheduling of the control centre, which was operational 24/7 and essential to the continued operation of a key city transport link, throughout the move program.

NSW Police Service

NSW Police Service engaged MoveCorp to manage its relocation from 12 sites around Sydney into the new purpose built Police Headquarters in Parramatta. 2,200 uniformed and civilian staff relocated, as well as their complex computer systems, critical operations centres and highly sensitive records. This transition took place over 44 individual moves from May 2003 until April 2004. MoveCorp joined the NSW Police Project Team 12 months prior to the first relocation.

Mirvac

From December 2006 through to mid 2008, MoveCorp has been undertaking a review of Mirvac’s document management capabilities in preparation for their relocation to the central Sydney CBD. The program surveyed approximately 450 staff and involved the re-engineering of hardcopy systems, policies, procedures and storage hardware to suit the new environment. The exercise was intended to herald a move towards a paperless environment and successfully implemented a 58% reduction in filing space. The initial 2400 lineal metres of filing was reduced to 1008 lineal metres across all departments. MoveCorp was subsequently appointed to undertake all Relocation Management for Mirvac.

Southbank Institute of Technology (SBIT) - Brisbane

SBIT relocated from three sites at Morningside, Kangaroo Point and Southbank; relocating a total of approximately 28 000 students and 740 staff, working across 100 different teams. The Institute was moved into 11 new and four refurbished buildings over a three year program. The key project challenges lay in accommodating the requirements of specialised and varied departments, from dental prosthetics to darkrooms and from photography to fitness. In addition to this, special attention was required to ensure the smooth relocation of library spaces. As such, detailed departmental planning was central to success. As teaching continued throughout the program, it was essential that service delivery could be maintained during the relocation process without disruption to learning.

Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific Airways entrusted its relocation from Kai Tak to Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok to MoveCorp in 1998. The task entailed planning for the transfer of operations, stores and tarmac support, office, safety and catering facilities. Despite having been undertaken 12 years ago, this project set a globally-recognised benchmark for overnight relocation within the aviation sector.
